A major commercial vehicle fire stymied traffic on the Maine Turnpike on Monday afternoon.

Shortly before 2 p.m. on February 24, the York, Maine Fire Department was dispatched after “upwards of 30” 911 callers reported a tractor trailer on fire on I-95 southbound just south of Beech Ridge Road.

When crews arrived on the scene, “it was quickly determined that the cargo was frozen curly french fries and not a hazardous material.”

Firefighters used approximately 6,000 gallons of water to beat back the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

The trailer and curly fry cargo were a total loss.

Responding agencies include York Police, York Beach Fire, Kittery Police, Kittery Fire, Maine State Police, and the Maine Turnpike Authority.
