More than 200 protesters blocked a huge amount of semi trucks from crossing the commercial World Trade Bridge connecting Mexico and Texas on Monday.

The demonstration, which occurred on May 21st near Cuidad Victoria, Mexico, protested the disappearance of dozens of people in border cities such as Nuevo Laredo, as well as the government’s lack of response to the more than 43 filed complaints, all regarding disappeared family members.

“We are demanding justice,” explained Estela Gonzalez, a woman who has already filed a complaint regarding her missing nephew-in-law and the lack of governmental response to the matter.

“Alive or dead or however they may be, we want to know what happened to them,” she said to CBS DFW.

Nuevo Laredo acts as a crucial drug smuggling corridor for rival gangs, putting the city directly in the middle of a wave of violence, the cause of the many unexplained disappearances.

Nuevo Laredo’s mayor, Rafael Pedraza Dominguez, visited the bridge on Monday afternoon, promising to engage in talks with them regarding the disappearances in an attempt to persuade the protesters to leave but it was not enough, and the protesters maintained the roadblock, preventing swaths of big rigs from making their deliveries.

“What we want is a solution, and if (the missing) have already been harmed, well, what happened to their bodies?” Gonzalez continued.

The protestors began to disperse Monday evening, finally allowing the semi trucks to pass through, but backups remains prevalent in the area as of Tuesday morning.
