Fans who attended the ‘Bandit Big Rigs’ race at the Highland Rim Speedway in Tennessee got a lot closer to the action than anticipated on Saturday evening.

During the race, a collision between two trucks caused one rig to grind the barrier wall, sending sparks flying into the crowd and nearly pushing the truck into onlookers.

The footage was captured by spectator Karen Yuhes, who described the incident to local WKRN news.

“They were both coming around in turn four. The [one] truck hit the [other] truck and he didn’t really have anywhere to go. He just kind of rode the wall and wound up going over the concrete and through the fence and he broke a wood pole. I don’t know if you noticed the photographer that was there. He had just jumped up there to start taking pictures, and he had to dive right back down because the car had come through the wall.”

Yuhes says there was ‘panic’ in the crowd as it happened.

“I was there with my parents,” she said. “There were sparks and I was trying to get in front of my mom. And there were a bunch of kids out there, so I was just worried about them.”

Thankfully, the safety cables did their job and prevented the truck from leaving the track. The driver of the truck, Mike Morgan, said he was a little sore after the incident, but not seriously injured.
