A massive petrochemical reactor was transported to ExxonMobil’s Netherland facility by semi truck recently, but the journey took more than a year.

The reactor is part of an upgrade to the Rotterdam, Netherlands petrochemical facility, and getting it there was quite a job.

According to Exxon Mobil, one of the three massive reactors towers transported to the facility is around 100 feet tall, nearly 15 feet wide, and weighs 700 tons, making it a tricky load to transport. That’s why, once loaded onto the big rig, it took the convoy 18 months to transport the reactor only 30 miles.

The giant piece has since been installed using massive cranes, but has yet to be used to convert heavy fuel into other products. The three reactors weigh a total of 1,393 tons, and are expected to be up and running by the end of the year, converting fuel oil into low-sulfur diesel and base stocks used in lubricants.
